C-CDA R3.0 Updated Value Sets Available

The National Library of Medicine is pleased to announce the Value Set Authority Center (VSAC) publication and downloadable files for the release of the HL7 Consolidated Clinical Document Architecture (C-CDA) 3.0 value sets, authored by the HL7 US Realm Program Management Steward group and sponsored by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC). This release contains 119 C-CDA value sets.

C-CDA R3.0 merges the C-CDA R2.1 and the C-CDA Companion Guides, adds C-CDA enhancement requests, and incorporates new design and guidance for USCDI V4. Annual value set updates will occur to provide terminologies for USCDI releases and to address comments or requests from the US Realm C-CDA community.

There are several ways you can access the updated C-CDA R3.0 value sets:

• VSAC Welcome Page: The Search button in the HL7 C-CDA Value Sets program block leads you to the VSAC Search Value Sets web browser, prefiltered by this HL7 C-CDA R3.0 release. The Download link in the HL7 C-CDA Value Sets program block leads you to the C-CDA Value Sets section of the VSAC Download tab and provides prepackaged downloadable files.
• VSAC Download: Here, you can download the Excel file, pipe-delimited text files, and XML files of the C-CDA value sets; Code System Versions Currently in C-CDA R3.0 Value Sets; a list of C-CDA R3.0 Value Sets Available in VSAC; and, a list of C-CDA R3.0 Value Sets Unavailable in VSAC. The published downloadable C-CDA R3.0 2024-08-09 release excludes 10 C-CDA value sets for which VSAC does not have the required supporting code systems.
• VSAC Search Value Sets: In the VSAC web browser, you can search, sort, filter and view and download details for all or individual C-CDA value sets. Use the Export Search Results button to download a catalog of C-CDA value set expansions. To download all 2024 C-CDA value set expansions as Excel, XML, or Text files, increase the paging to 120 rows and use the check boxes to select value sets.
• VSAC FHIR API: 
  • This FHIR API request will return the expanded code list of one specified OID: [https://cts.nlm.nih.gov/fhir/ValueSet/2.16.840.1.113883.11.20.9.46/$expand?expansion=C-CDA R3.0 2024-08-09]
  • These two FHIR API requests will together return a list of all 119 value sets contained within this release:
