CMS Issues Technical Guidance for Valid Reporting of Custodian ID using CMS Certification Numbers in QRDA Category I Files for Hospital Quality Reporting Programs

August 8, 2017 - 9:45am

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has issued technical guidance for vendors and data submitters to electronically submit hospital custodian IDs or CMS Certification Numbers (CCNs) in Quality Reporting Document Architecture (QRDA) Category I files.  Vendors can avoid errors by only submitting CCNs for the custodian/assignedCustodian/representedCustodianOrganization/id.  Other types of identifiers with numerical values that do not meet the length requirement will return an error.  This issue affects hospitals participating in the Hospital Inpatient Quality Reporting (IQR) Program and the Medicare Electronic Health Record (EHR) Incentive Program for Eligible Hospitals (EHs) and Critical Access Hospitals (CAHs) in the 2017 reporting period only.  Please visit the eCQI Resource Center QRDA Space for a detailed description of this issue, guidance, and examples.

You can find additional QRDA-related resources, as well as current and past implementation guides, at the eCQI Resource Center and the CMS eCQM Library.  For questions related to this guidance, the QRDA Implementation Guides, or Schematrons, visit the ONC QRDA JIRA Issue Tracker.
